A Walloping Winter

It was not your imagination, the winter of 2013-2014 was a winter to remember.  I like to call it the "winter of sleet".  It seems like most of the frozen precipitation that fell in central Arkansas was in that form.

Now that meteorological winter is over (December 1st through February 28th), we can look at how brutal the past few months have been officially.

  • Little Rock fell into the single digits for the first time since 1996.
  • The average low temperature was the coldest since the winter of 1983-1984 and the 13th coldest on record
  • Little Rock had 60 days at or below freezing temperatures and that's the most since the winter of 1978-1979
  • There were 9 days with temperatures below 20 and that's the most since the winter of 2000-2001
  • There were 16 days with snowfall... measurable of not... which was the most since the winter of 1983-1984
  • There were 10 days with snow on the ground....measurable or not... making it the most since 2000-2001
I made a few graphics which shows you how much above average we were this winter in terms of snowfall.  You must remember, the National Weather Service considers sleet, snow.  So that's figured into these numbers.  Also listed below are many of the records around the state for March.  I took these from the NWS Little Rock facebook page.  Thanks to them for compiling this data.

Why can't every winter be like this? Now it's already starting to get hot again with the insects' resurrection from hell and we'll have to wait another 8 to 9 months for cold weather.

Todd-Please change this blog post. Those records you are showing below the snow totals are for the first 7 days of March only. I tweeted you earlier about this, but I wanted to let you know that these records are still listed in your Walloping Winter post as Winter records when the NWS put on FB that they were for the first 7 days of March only. Thank you!
