Hottest Day Of The Year Possible Today

4:30 PM Update... The high temperature today was 111 degrees.  In case you're wondering, that's 18 degrees above the average high for the day (93).  This will go down as the 3rd hottest day in Little Rock weather history and the 2nd hottest July day.

The hottest temperature in my attic was 137.8 degrees.

2:30 PM Update... The temperature hit 110 degrees at 2:04 PM as the dewpoint dropped into the 50s with strong northwesterly winds.  This is now the 3rd hottest day in Little Rock weather history and I don't think it's over yet.

12:30 PM Update.... this could be a historical day weatherwise for much of Arkansas including Little Rock.  As I write this, the high so far is 108 and the daily record is 108 set in 1986.  I think it's very possible to hit at least 110 degrees today which would make it tie for the 3rd hottest day ever in Little Rock weather history and that dates back to the 1870s.  The hottest day ever for the month of July was 112 degrees set in 1986 on the 31st.  The hottest day ever in Little Rock weather history was set just last August when the mercury climbed to an incredible 114 degrees on August 3rd.  All these records will be challenged today.

However, there are a few clouds across northern Arkansas which will drift to the south.  This could put the breaks on the extreme heat.  Also, I expect thunderstorms to develop across north central into northeast Arkansas.  Outflow from these storms could cool temperatures if it gets here before the hottest part of the day.  These are all things to consider as we watch history in the making today.

The hi res NAM indicates storm development this afternoon across the north.
Another hi res model shows a few storms there as well this afternoon.

Just consider-- in 1954 when there was record-breaking heat--there was NO AIR CONDITIONING!!! I was alive then, but too young to remember!
I do remember nights when it was too hot to sleep and mom said when she was growing up in Ft. Smith, people would lie quilts on the grass and sleep outside. I was about 11 or 12 when we first got air conditioning! It was bliss!

We had a microburst in bull shoals. There was heavy damage. Lets talk about that.

Someone please tell me this wretched heat will go away by the end of August. Here's to hoping that a hurricane will ensure a pattern flip and that fall will yield nice, cool temperatures.

Todd-

One more time on the 1980 105 degree days. According to your post of the JUNE,July, and August temps of that summer 1980 had 12 days of 105 or better. All of your comments and bar graphs say 10 days.

I am referring to your post of July 19 "It could be worse, summer 1980 remembered.
