Merry Christmas

9 PM Saturday Update... I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas.  For Blake it was Elmo, Elmo, Elmo all the time and he's loving every second of it!  We also got him... I mean Santa got him a miniature recliner he can kick back in and enjoy watching Elmo.

The flurries were nice, but I was hoping for a little bit more of course.  One of our regular and loyal bloggers, Kaleb Turner, in Pangburn sent in some video and a few pictures of the light snowfall up there.  Thanks Kaleb.

I will have a new post within the next couple of days calling it a "Wild and Wacky Week Ahead".  It appears a major storm system will affect the central United States late this upcoming week.  We should be in the warm sector which raises concerns for severe/strong thunderstorms.  Right now, the details are not clear as to how this will evolve. Hopefully we can keep instability levels in check and get away with just some much needed rain and thunder.  SOOOO much will change between now and then so I'll keep you updated here!

Merry Christmas and enjoy the videos from Kaleb!

I want to wish ALL of you a very Merry Christmas. This is truly my favorite time of the year and I'll be spending it with my entire family. I hope you will be able to be with yours.

As we return to blogging after Christmas, the BIG story will be the potential for a powerful storm system in the plains as we go into the end of next week. This system is a week away and so much will change between now and then. BUT, there is the possibility for thunderstorms and some could become strong as unseasonably warm temperatures and moisture move into the region. Let's not think too much about it now and enjoy what Christmas is all about.

Thanks again everyone for making the blog what it is today! Merry Christmas!

While winter weather may not be much of a problem this weekend, severe weather may be a consideration to end 2010/start 2011. Some data I've seen shows much colder weather behind the departing system next week. I hope this isn't setting up to be a Jan. 21, 1999 type tornado outbreak; but with preliminary data I've seen, I'm already very concerned. I'm also gearing up for possible severe weather operations with Skywarn and Amateur Radio during that time...and people should plan to review severe weather safety rules early next week, just in case.

Merry Christmas Todd, Ninja, and everyone! Hopefully 2010 won't end with a tornado outbreak and just a usual squall line like you said. Something very worth watching.

Daryl - good point, I was comparing data from the 1999 setup and this one and its very similar. Im sure it won't be to long before the SPC includes arkansas in the day 4-8 outlook

At least we haven't gotten the massive snows that the upper Midwest have gotten...or the blizzard conditions from an intense nor'easter storm in the coming days. Had that been the case, with well over a foot or more of snow, Arkansas wouldn't move for days!!

Unfortunately, it appears we'll have problems of our own, with a severe weather threat (including tornadoes) to end 2010, and start 2011. That, I am NOT looking forward to.

Thats not a white christmas! When we hace accumulations exceeding 3 inches or more talk to me about a white christmas.

Seems like every year everybody gets over worked up on snow for christmas and i got new for ya. IT DONT SNOW!!! Or it dont accumulate! lol. I cant believe how bad the models were at forecasting the snow and cold. I wonder how bad the models are with the next storm this weekend? Im not holding my breath at all until I look out my window!!

How are you'll so concerned about a weather system 5 days out? Sure the temps are going to be warm but how do you know its going to be severe weather comparable to Jan. 99?

Daryl Stout said...

Meteorology is such an inexact science...look at all of the forecast models in existence!! If a storm system goes fifty miles either side of the forecast track, the whole forecast changes; and that can happen at the last minute. I myself like ONE good snow a year, and I'm happy...but, after that, I don't want to see it until the next winter...and winter is 3 months long, just like the other seasons. I've talked to ham radio operators in Minnesota over the last few days, and they are SICK of all the snow up there...and I'm sure the folks in the northeast U.S. that are now under Blizzard Warnings will soon feel the same way. While there are people on this blog who are "dying for snow", there are many others who do NOT want to deal with it, as they have to be out in the elements. As I said before, if Arkansas got that kind of snow (well over a foot several times each winter), the state would shut down for days, if not weeks, or more. That becomes an issue if you lose power, heat, or start running low on food, etc. Never mind the school kids who would end up losing their spring break, summer vacation, etc., because winter snow and ice kept them out of school. The same can be said for severe weather...while some folks like it, many others want nothing to do with it. Once you or your family has been affected by winter or severe weather...whether in injury, loss of property, or death of loved ones...I would hope that you would change your tune. Two comments, both by chasers, sum it up: "Someone could be dying in that tornado you're watching"...which likely happened when the tornado destroyed a house...prompting a second chaser to lament "the fun is over". If that does not put things into perspective, nothing will.

I just saw on the Climate Prediction Center 8-14 Day Outlook, that shows below normal temperatures, and above normal precipitation for Arkansas. While it may be what develops, that likely will change, and is more of a tease right now...like the cold bias of the GFS!! But, if the potential for both below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation increases in the 8-14 Day Outlook, and as the forecast gets closer, things could get interesting!! If it does provide wintry precipitation, I hope it'll be snow, and not ice!!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and safe travels!

My sister-in-law and niece are stuck in NY, their flights were scheduled for this morning, I don't think that is going to happen.

I say bring on the warm humid air this week (minus the severe weather) as my dry skin needs to rehydrate, lol.

Ok Todd, I had signed up for twitter awhile back but never tried it, but seeing y'all going to town on here made me jump in (on my DROID, lol). I now follow all of you so keep up the great work. Twitter really makes me feel like a stalker, lol. (well, what I GUESS a stalker would feel like, dont want anyone to get the wrong impression). I'm a NASCAR fan so it is kind of cool to follow those guys as well.

Have a great day, we WILL get our snow this year, dangit!

Hello Everyone, Well all I can say is what a start from Dec.1 until now "BASICALLY NOTHING". Yes, its been pretty cold, other than that just plain boring, Everyone needs to read the Harris Farmers Almanac for this Winter WOW!! It has been almost dead on, So close its almost scary, But last years Almanac was very close too.. This years Almanac even called the Noreaster & light snow in Ark & other parts of the south..According to this years Almanac we could see our first snow snow storm for parts of our area Jan. 13-16 & our Coldest periods will be Jan. 2-6 Jan.13-17 Jan. 22-23 Jan. 28-31 as far as Feb. it call for Temps below normal & precip near normal. I am a beleiver in the Almanac as I told Todd at the beginning of the winter. Let's see how it does..It also says the end of Feb. could be a high potential for severe weather for our area...As for as my thoughts over the next 2 weeks, I would have to agree with the Almanac regarding winter weather around Jan. 13-16..But we never know what mother nature has in store for us...I also see a chance of winter weather around Jan.6-10, I beleive that's about the time Ninja said we would see something also...We Shall See...

Good thoughts snowbird great job as usual i will &ave to check out the harris

I briefly heard a meteorologist on the radio today, he said Arkansas will get a big snowstorm from mid-late January into February. He also said this year matches the pattern of 1989 when little rock got a foot of snow. I really hope we get a huge snowstorm at some point.

Hello Foot of Snow! I like the posts so far...reminds me so much of last year!! I always get excited when I see Snowbob has made a post :) I also see the Almanacs are almost dead on. I try and read them right at the start of fall and monitor what they said after the fact and it's pretty interesting. And Todd, your pretty dead on too :) Bring on crazy weather!
