Video Blog Friday December 17th, 2010

Noon Saturday Update... I am studying the models for late this week.  What's becoming very clear is the passage of a cold front and the digging of a trough across the east.  At this point in time, the chance for any snow looks bleak, but since we're still several days away, I have learned growing up in Arkansas... "Never Say Never."  It's good advice to anyone dealing with our weather!

While the models show highs in the 40s and sunny skies, there are still details that need to be sorted out that can change the forecast.  I'm keeping and eye on it and I'll have an in depth post late this weekend!

8:30 PM Friday update... Thanks to those up at Queen Wilhelmina State Park in far western Arkansas.  A little elevation and moisture are combining for a wintry scene at the lodge.  I stayed up there last May and it's a fantastic place to get away from it all.

Don't expect this at the lower elevations though.  While we will see a few flakes fly across western Arkansas, it won't be anything like what you see below... enjoy..

Looks like we can bring the shorts out fur christmas an new years. Looks ike joe b nailed another long term forecast. Looks like we had our winter in early an mid dec an we managed to get the big doughnut as far as snow. I c no more chances this winter i hope im wrong but i just dont see it.

I see we have moved up another percent to 2%! Woohoo! I think there is a better chance we will see hail than snow on Christmas weekend by what the model are showing. Haha.

Hey Todd i am looking at the radar returns and i am seeing a lot more moisture in Oklahoma than any of the models were showing for today, could this mean the moisture is going to stay together and give us a surprise tonight.

Really no need panic now. We rarely see snow in December, and I wouldnt worry the least bit about a long range forecast for Jan.We have been warmer than normal the past 10 Winters and have got snow. Winter dont even really start for another 5 days, and then we have 8-9 weeks to get our snow. This pattern will not last that long. Even if it is warmer than normal, that may mean wetter than normal too, which is a good thing in Jan and Feb for snow. I would be more worried about a couple ice eventS in the coming weeks.....

Just looked at Baker Lake Canada and the temp is 30 degrees, same as ours. The all time record for them is 30 degrees in December. They should shatter that today. Also, Fort Yukon is -58 at the same time. There is some incredible temp variations in the far northern climes. This means to me that there is a lot of oscillation of the atmosphere that may mean either some incredible warm weather for us in the near future and or extreme cold for us later on in Feb or March. Joe B is still sticking with us being warmer than normal in Jan and Feb. He may be right, but I think we could get a surprise in Feb or March.

A followup on Baker Lake Canada. At 10 am the town is up to 34 degrees F. That is 4 degrees above the all time high for December. Current conditions include light rain. What? Hello! This may be the first time ever they have recorded precipitaion in Dec that wasn't frozen.
