Thursday Snow

NEW BLOG POST WITH SNOW TOTALS AND WHAT'S NEXT COMING SOON!

As we have said here on the Arkansas Weather Blog since last weekend, this is not the storm from Sunday January 9th and it's northern section of the state that gets the most snow.  After reviewing all the data from last night, I have no significant changes.  I expect light rain changing to snow late this morning into the early afternoon hours in central Arkansas with amounts around 1'' with some spots possibly getting up to 2'' especially just north and west of the metro.  Since temperatures will be hovering around freezing, I'm HOPING the main roads will just stay wet, but bridges and overpasses could get some slick spots.  Secondary roads will also have to be watched carefully.

I will of course have more here on the blog and on twitter all throughout the day!

Many of you are curious about the Sunday/Monday system.  The GFS continues to show a chance for some snow, but the Euro keeps anything that falls very light.  With it several days away, this will still have a chance to change.  I don't think the models are doing a great job handling how the pieces of puzzle come together with this one.  Also, several of you have pointed out the high amounts of snow on the 120 hour GFS snowfall accumulation map I post quite often.  You must remember that 120 hour map is taking into account TWO storm systems.. the one today and the one late this weekend.  Just a quick glance at the 00Z run of the GFS, it shows Little Rock receiving around 1 to 1.5'' today and up to 2.5'' Sunday.

120 hour GFS taking into account TWO storms

I've just gotta say.....if the temperature had been just a little colder in west Little Rock today, we would have had a heckuva snow!! It would have rivaled January 9, for sure!! We had fat, fluffy, snowflakes falling hard... and it was gorgeous!! It would have covered the ground in a minute had we been below freezing!! Oh well....it was a gorgeous wintery day here in central Arkansas. Now on to the next event!! Once again....temperatures will mean everything!!

In St Charles WLR we have 1.5 inches on the deck. All grassy areas are covered. During the heaviest part of the snow our street was white top to bottom, but turned to slush as soon as the snowfall became light. It was pretty to look at coming down. Joe B says that the cold will last at least through middle of Feb.

I still think that the winters of 2011-12 and 2013-14 will be the coldest and snowiest of the next 6 including this one for central Ark.

Hello Everyone, First this is for Jason H, How did you do on your snowfall... & I havent't updated on the Blog since I gave my personal prediction back on Monday, Jan.17. The reason was because I liked my predictions & had no reasons to change my thinking. I did however update my predictions on the snowfall for the Little Rock area yesterday, Monday I said the Little Rock area could see up to an inch of snow, I went with 2-3 inches, didnt quite get there, maybe in a few spots around town, closer to 2.. Regarding the winter weather event or events poss coming up late in the weekend & the middle of next week, I will give my full detailed outlook, tomorrow evening or Sat. morning on the new blog Todd is about to start, The upcoming poss events looks to be much more complicated than these past two events...Hope for more...We Shall See..

Hoping the snowfall Sunday night/Monday morning will give us LOTS and LOTS of beautiful snow. I love it!!! After the Summer of 2010, it's a pleasure to have cold temps in the Natural State.

So I'm hoping Sunday and Monday will pan out, but after chatting with Todd in the chat room, he didn't seem to confident. By the way, I had a blast, though I missed some of my old friends on there! *ahem, shack, guru, & fanatic who seem to have abandoned us for twitter*...however, I did talk to some of my old friends and even made some new ones! Thanks Todd for all that you do! Now, with all that said...NWS has on their forecast for next Thurs. & Fri. has what looks to be yet ANOTHER chance of snow!! What are thoughts on this? Anyone???
